day 17 – The Sound of Music, visiting the Von Trapp family in Salzburg

Abtenau, Austria > Salzburg, Austria

Finally I got to live a life long dream and visit some of the locations from the sound of music the famous movie about the Von Trapp family during World War II, most of the scenes were filmed in Salzburg, so that was my destination for the day.

The mirrored ‘Hallstätter See’ just outside the town of Hallstatt.

A mirror selfie 😉

I just love using my iPad to take a photo 😉

The town of Hallstatt.

When you travel through Austria and Switzerland you must have these two stickers on your car when travelling on the motorways and freeways, if you dont have these you run the risk of heavy fines, in Switzerland in particular.

Hallstatt is quite the tourist town. Hallstatt is known for its production of salt, dating back to prehistoric times, and gave its name to the Hallstatt culture, a culture often linked to Celtic, Proto-Celtic, and pre-Illyrian peoples in Early Iron Age Europe, c.800–450 BC. Some of the earliest archaeological evidence for the Celts was found in Hallstatt. (source: wikipedia)

My trusty GoPro that I have with me everywhere, its a great way to re-live some of the places I have visited and show my family how amazing the rest of the world is.

We are here, Salzburg, Schloss Leopoldskron was the facade of the Von Trapp family home, now it is home to the ‘Salzburg Global Seminar’, you can also experience living in some of the state rooms of the old palace.

Looks familiar to me 😉 starting to get excited 😉

and the Von Trapp family home, its not until you make your way across the river that it all falls in to place and you really notice the building from the movie.

and there we have it, and a perfect sunset as the golden sun bathed the building creating a silhouette of the ducks in the lake, majestic I have to say.

I had to prove I was here 😉

A beautiful park that surrounds the lake.

After a long day of driving, walking, being told to move along (well kicked out of private properties ;)) I finally got back to Abtenau for a Beer and some dinner.

Without doubt the best Schnitzel I had on the entire trip, and cheap, total with 2 beers, salad and garlic bread, $9 AUD.

A great day really taking me back to my childhood when I first watched the Sound of Music Movie, then finishing it off with a traditional Austrian meal, I really felt like I was in Austria.
