Recently I had the opportunity to attend the official Media Call for the World Rally Championship Rally Australia event in Sydney, in 2011 WRC drivers climbed the Sydney Centre Point Tower (images here), I had never been and it was a great experience, when I was told that this year they would be climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge I knew I had to be there, not to mention Adrian Coppin one of my clients was also doing the climb, this just reinforced the opportunity.
I arrived at about 8:15am with my Portuguese friends, Andre Lavadinho and Beatriz, the climb wasn’t due to start till 11am, off course we had to run through all the safety procedures, make sure all our gear was locked in place (don’t want a camera falling) and go through a simple briefing.
11am came around pretty quickly and before I knew it we where conversing through tight tiny spaces, lets be honest I am not the smallest of guys, but I managed to squeeeeeze through 🙂 I am quite nimble you know ;), I must say though having two camera bodies and a Go Pro was quite the hassle (will post a short video at a later date), I am surprised my flashes didn’t just snap off with the amount of bangs they endured.
We stopped a few times along the way to grab the obligatory shots of the drivers with Sydney Opera House in the background and before we knew it I had climbed the 1056 steps and was at the very top, it certainly wasn’t as hard as I had envisaged and the views are just amazing.
Andre and Beatriz both said it was the best thing they had done in their lives, I must say it ranks up there for me also, living in Sydney you never get to appreciate what this city has to offer and the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb is one that everyone needs to experience, at least once, I intend to go again at a more leisurely pace I think, and with no cameras 😉
